Complaining about a car rental company in Croatia: Mandatory written complaint and State Inspectorate
You rented in Croatia and money left your card. The question that drives everything is not the name of the company, it is the country you rented in: that is what decides which authority you can turn to for free. In Croatia, the official route is this one, and it costs nothing: Mandatory written complaint and State Inspectorate.
What is the free remedy after renting in Croatia?
Croatian consumer law requires the trader to allow a written complaint to be filed and to answer it in writing, in principle within fifteen days. That is a legal duty, not a commercial courtesy: failing it can be reported and adds a further grievance.
The official remedy in four lines
| Body | Mandatory written complaint and State Inspectorate (gospodarstvo.gov.hr) |
|---|---|
| Cost | Free |
| Language | Croatian or English |
| Mandatory reply deadline | 15 days |
Step by step
- File your complaint in writing, by email or post, and keep proof of filing: it is what starts the reply deadline.
- Insist on a written answer. A phone call does not count and leaves no usable trace.
- If no reply comes within the deadline, report the failure to the Croatian State Inspectorate (Državni inspektorat), which is competent for consumer protection.
- Always attach the contract, the invoice, time-stamped photos and the bank statement: the inspectorate works from documents.
What comes next, in the same country
- State Inspectorate and the consumer mediation centres attached to the Croatian Chamber of Economy.
- You do not live in Croatia: the European Consumer Centre in your country refers the case to its Croatian counterpart, free of charge.
Four more remedies, independent of this one
The country remedy is the second of five. The others do not depend on it and run in parallel: you only need one to succeed.
- Written complaint to the rental company, dated facts, exact amount, a 14-day deadline. It is the prerequisite every other procedure demands. Template
- European Consumer Centre of your country of residence, free, which refers the case to its counterpart in the company's country. The network covers the European Union, Norway and Iceland. Text
- Card payment dispute for services not provided and unauthorised charges, within 60 to 120 days of the charge. It is the deadline that expires first. Template
- Legal expenses insurance, often included in a car or household policy: the insurer appoints a lawyer at its own cost. Email
