Complaining about a car rental company in France: SignalConso and the consumer mediator

You rented in France and money left your card. The question that drives everything is not the name of the company, it is the country you rented in: that is what decides which authority you can turn to for free. In France, the official route is this one, and it costs nothing: SignalConso and the consumer mediator.

The short answer

What is the free remedy after renting in France?

Two complementary tools. SignalConso forwards your report to the French fraud control authority (DGCCRF) and notifies the company: it is free, fast, and reports visibly accumulate. The consumer mediator is the one that can get you refunded: every French trader must appoint one and publish its details in its terms and on its website. Referral is free.

The procedure

Step by step

  1. Send a written complaint to the rental company with a fourteen-day deadline. The mediator requires that prior attempt and will reject the referral without it.
  2. Report the practice on SignalConso. It takes five minutes.
  3. Find the company's consumer mediator: the details must appear in the terms and conditions and in the website footer. Refer online, free of charge.
  4. If the company is foreign but you rented in France, the designated French mediator is still the competent one.
SignalConso will not refund youIt is a reporting tool, not a dispute resolution one. It weighs over time and it notifies the company, but it will not return your money. The lever that refunds is the consumer mediator, and it can only be used after a written complaint has gone unanswered or been answered unsatisfactorily. Do both, in that order.
If that is not enough

What comes next, in the same country

  1. Mediation failed: a conciliateur de justice, free of charge, then the local small claims court.
  2. You do not live in France: the European Consumer Centre in your country refers the case to its French counterpart, free of charge.
The other levers

Four more remedies, independent of this one

The country remedy is the second of five. The others do not depend on it and run in parallel: you only need one to succeed.

  1. Written complaint to the rental company, dated facts, exact amount, a 14-day deadline. It is the prerequisite every other procedure demands. Template
  2. European Consumer Centre of your country of residence, free, which refers the case to its counterpart in the company's country. The network covers the European Union, Norway and Iceland. Text
  3. Card payment dispute for services not provided and unauthorised charges, within 60 to 120 days of the charge. It is the deadline that expires first. Template
  4. Legal expenses insurance, often included in a car or household policy: the insurer appoints a lawyer at its own cost. Email
By dispute type

The arguments change with the type of dispute

The remedy above is the same whatever your dispute, but what you write in it changes completely. Pick yours.

The fast route

Your five letters, already filled in, in ten minutes

The portal writes the complaint to the rental company, the filing with SignalConso and the consumer mediator, the letter to the European Consumer Centre, the card dispute and the email to your broker, all in your name. It picks the right remedy automatically from the rental country you enter. Free, no commission, no power of attorney: you send them yourself.
