Complaining about a car rental company in Greece: Greek Consumer Ombudsman (Συνήγορος του Καταναλωτή)

You rented in Greece and money left your card. The question that drives everything is not the name of the company, it is the country you rented in: that is what decides which authority you can turn to for free. In Greece, the official route is this one, and it costs nothing: Greek Consumer Ombudsman (Συνήγορος του Καταναλωτή).

The short answer

What is the free remedy after renting in Greece?

The Consumer Ombudsman is an independent authority that handles disputes with traders established in Greece free of charge. Filing is done online, in Greek or in English. It does not issue a binding decision, but it summons the parties and issues a written recommendation, and a trader that ignores it does so under the authority's eye.

The procedure

Step by step

  1. First send a written complaint to the rental company: the Ombudsman asks for evidence of an attempt at amicable settlement.
  2. File online at synigoroskatanaloti.gr, attaching the contract, the invoice, the bank statement and the correspondence.
  3. Write in English if you do not speak Greek: it is accepted, and it avoids a rough translation that would weaken the file.
  4. In parallel, report the practice to the consumer protection service of the Ministry of Development, which feeds enforcement.
A recommendation, not a rulingThe Greek Ombudsman recommends, it does not impose. That does not make it useless, quite the opposite: filing is free, it forces the trader to explain itself in writing, and the recommendation then carries weight with your bank, with the European Consumer Centre and before a court. But do not pause your other steps while waiting, especially the card dispute, whose clock is running.
If that is not enough

What comes next, in the same country

  1. Recommendation ignored: the Greek small claims court, or a consumer association that can act collectively.
  2. You do not live in Greece: the European Consumer Centre in your country refers the case to its Greek counterpart, free of charge.
The other levers

Four more remedies, independent of this one

The country remedy is the second of five. The others do not depend on it and run in parallel: you only need one to succeed.

  1. Written complaint to the rental company, dated facts, exact amount, a 14-day deadline. It is the prerequisite every other procedure demands. Template
  2. European Consumer Centre of your country of residence, free, which refers the case to its counterpart in the company's country. The network covers the European Union, Norway and Iceland. Text
  3. Card payment dispute for services not provided and unauthorised charges, within 60 to 120 days of the charge. It is the deadline that expires first. Template
  4. Legal expenses insurance, often included in a car or household policy: the insurer appoints a lawyer at its own cost. Email
